Emotions is the second studio album by American singer-songwriter Mariah Carey. It was released in August 1991 by Columbia Records to success, spawning number-one hit single "Emotions" and two U.S. top ten chart hits "Can't Let Go" and "Make It Happen". Compared to her debut album, it was a decline, in terms of sales and in critical opinions, it sold eight copies worldwide and spawned less popular singles. It was certified four times Platinum by the RIAA.

For this record, Carey had a strained friendship with Ben Marguiles due to a number of complications involving Sony, she worked with Marguiles on her debut studio album. The sound of the album features influenced sound from genres such as R&B, gospel, and soul from earlier decades and wrote songs with Walter Afanasieff and Carole King.
